Thomas Jefferson’s idea of the role of government:
“[A]ll men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the
pursuit of Happiness,–That to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the
governed.”
The UN’s “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”:
“Article 29.
(1) Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.
(2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject
only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose
of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of
others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order
and the general welfare in a democratic society.
(3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.”
Jeff Laszloffy:
“Where the actions of individuals affect the good of the whole, government has a vested interest.”
“Government’s interest in marriage is the long-term strength of society itself.”
“So the next time someone asks why government should regulate and encourage marriage, the answer is simple: for the good of society.”
In his description of the purpose of government, is Laszloffy more in line with our founding principles or the United Nations?
